A mural is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface.  Probably the most distinguishing characteristic of mural painting is that the architectural elements of the given space are harmoniously incorporated into the picture.  A mural can be done on the existing wall or ceiling surface, on a false wall, or on a canvas which could be stretched on a frame on the wall itself.  A mural can be spontaneous or planned. Planned murals normally are quicker to produce.  Faux painting techniques such as grisaille, trompe l’oeil, frottage, stippling, color washing, sponging, ragging, mutton clothing, and stenciling will help create a beautiful mural.
